The overwhelming number of our players are black athletes. Most of the coaches these kids have been exposed, to at least on the college level, are white. Almost all of their professors are white. Almost all of the students on our campus – 90 percent of some thirty thousand students – are white. Now, for us as white people to insist that we understand where these black kids are coming from, what they’re going through – well, that requires some assumptions I don’t think we have a right to make.[234]
